Legal Issues and Common Pitfalls Faced by Start-Ups
KUIC and BTBC invite you to join Justin Poplin and Lisa Hansen, attorneys from Lathrop Gage LLP, as they provide a practical overview of the substantive legal issues and common pitfalls facing start-up companies. Key areas that will be covered include corporate formation strategies, contracts and agreements, as well as raising capital for your business. Additionally, the importance of building a solid intellectual property portfolio that will attract potential investors and detract competitors will be discussed in detail.
Lisa Hansen is a corporate transactional attorney and co-chair of the Firm’s Tax and Employee Benefits Department. She handles all aspects of federal income taxation, including entity formation and dissolution, corporate reorganization, partnership and limited liability company issues and issues affecting charitable and other tax-exempt organizations. She deals on a regular basis with state income, franchise and sales and tax issues, including litigation before administrative bodies in Missouri and Kansas. Lisa advises clients with respect to corporate fundraising.
Justin Poplin is a registered patent attorney and served as Department Chairman of Prosecution & Transactions in Lathrop Gage’s Intellectual Property Division from 2013 to 2016. He spends the majority of his time assisting clients with patent issues, including obtaining, enforcing, licensing, invalidating, and avoiding patents in a wide range of technologies. Justin also has extensive experience managing trademark portfolios and counseling clients regarding copyright, trade secret, licensing, and confidentiality issues.
